We are pioneers of green energy, producing climate-negative biomethane fuel based on circular economy principles, developing gas terminals, and building the Energiasalv pumped-storage hydro facility in Paldiski. Simply put, it is a gigantic battery that solves the challenge of large-scale renewable energy storage and paves the way for the success of clean energy, thereby ensuring additional energy security for Estonia.
We are developing a sustainable refuelling network by creating robust biomethane, LNG, electricity, and in the near future hydrogen refuelling options. Together with our customers, we have made it a priority to reduce the carbon footprint of transport through a community program within which we plant carbon-sequestering trees in Estonian forests.
Alexela is a unique energy company that, among other things, offers fuel, electricity, natural gas, and bottled gas, and improves customers’ lives with high-quality coffee and a refreshing break every time they visit our café-shops.
We understand that as a large company we play an important role both in the Estonian economy and in the lives of people here. That is why we support Estonia by empowering culture, sports, and charity.
We are making the world a better place! Come, let’s do it together.

Strategy and direction
Alexela is keeping pace with changing mobility trends and evolving customer needs. In 2021, we produced 85 GWh of biomethane based on circular economy principles, which is a climate-negative vehicle fuel. In the coming years, we see the need to multiply production and expand its use, as biomethane as a vehicle fuel helps reduce the carbon footprint of the transport sector.
We reward reuse – at Alexela, hot drinks are cheaper when you bring your own cup.
We created coffee cups featuring works by Estonian artists to show that reuse can be truly eye-catching. Innovation enables sustainability, which is why we have developed a range of smart digital solutions such as the Alexela app, loyalty campaigns, and smart in-app payment solutions.
We created Rohesärts – a renewable energy-based electricity package that brings green energy to our customers.
How do we help customers reduce their footprint?
In 2024, we reached the initial goal of our community program: we planted more than 1.3 million trees—one for every resident of Estonia. Over their lifetime, these trees will sequester 696,471 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
In 2023, we expanded our biomethane refuelling station network and sold 63 GWh of biomethane there. This climate-negative vehicle fuel helps reduce the carbon footprint of the transport sector.
We further developed the production of biomethane from agricultural waste based on circular economy principles. Did you know: one vehicle running on green gas makes not only itself but also one additional diesel car carbon-neutral!
We further expanded our public network of electric chargers and continue to offer a full-service electric charging solution to both private and business customers in order to accelerate the transition to lower-emission mobility.
We continue to offer our customers the green electricity package Rohesärts.
Focus areas
Alexela’s sustainable development focus areas include developing environmentally friendly refuelling solutions, advancing the circular economy, contributing to energy security, empowering communities, and supporting culture, sports, and charity. You can read more about the progress of these focus areas in our annual report.
Development of environmentally friendly refuelling solutions
Alexela's goal is to be carbon-neutral by 2030 at the latest. To achieve our climate goals, we have focused on developing environmentally friendly refueling solutions.
We empower the circular economy
We empower energy security
Alexela is building a pumped hydroelectric storage plant in Paldiski, which will allow us to solve the future challenge of renewable energy storage and thereby overcome one of the major obstacles to achieving climate neutrality.
We empower communities
Together we can achieve more. In 2020, we launched the Alexela community program, under which we have now planted at least one tree for every inhabitant of Estonia.
We empower culture, sports and charity
Alexela has been awarded the title of Friend of Culture by the Ministry of Culture. We have and continue to empower several cultural and sports organizations.
Rohetiiger
We are founding members of Rohetiiger (the Green Tiger) and actively participate in various green initiatives, such as creating an energy roadmap and participating in various expert groups.
Coffee cups featuring Estonian art
Single-use plastic products have a significant impact on the environment and human health. The European plastics strategy prioritises reducing plastic products, as this helps cut carbon emissions and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Alexela’s long-term goal is to become carbon neutral in its operations by 2030 at the latest by developing the circular economy, contributing to energy security, and initiating projects that reduce the carbon footprint. Among other goals, we have set the objective of phasing out single-use coffee cups by 2030 at the latest.
The company has a strategy to reduce the amount of single-use packaging and plastic bags placed on the market, which includes specific, measurable targets:
At Alexela, only paper bags and reusable bags made from Alexela’s used advertising banners are sold.
We encourage customers to use their own cups through dedicated calls to action, campaigns, and lower prices.
In selected locations, we offer a reusable cup option when purchasing hot drinks.
We are gradually creating convenient facilities for washing reusable cups next to coffee machines.
Alexela no longer uses single-use tableware in its advertising, and campaigns are focused on reusable tableware. The company cooperates with several organisations, including Pandipakend. In addition, we have developed a code of conduct for partners and our own employees, and we plan to expand Scope 3 carbon footprint measurement to help engage key stakeholders in achieving our environmental goals.
