Absolutely any vehicle can be refuelled at Alexela in 2019
Please note that although there may be a sign on the fuel filler flap of your car stating that it is not recommended to fill up with biofuel, in reality this sign only applies to biofuels that are 100% pure biofuel and do not contain a drop of conventional petrol or diesel. All car manufacturers have confirmed that petrol with a maximum ethanol content of 5% and diesel with a maximum biofuel content of 7% are suitable for use in all passenger cars.
The Association of Motor Trades and Service Companies (AMTEL) has drawn up a list of vehicles that are not recommended to use petrol with more than 5% ethanol, but this only applies to spring 2019, when the biofuel obligation will increase. The relevant information is published on the website of the Public Road Administration.
Will the biofuel obligation raise fuel prices?
The impact of biofuels on the price of fuel at the pump depends on the size of the biofuel obligation as well as on the world market price of biofuels and conventional petrol and diesel. For petrol, it is encouraging that the biofuel obligation will not increase the price of petrol. Unfortunately, the situation is different for diesel, due to the much higher price of biodiesel, which today has an impact of around 0.5 cents per litre on the price of diesel.
Fuel labelling at service stations
The diesel fuel is identified by a black square on a white background with BX inside, where B indicates that the diesel contains biodiesel and X is the corresponding number indicating the maximum percentage of biodiesel in the diesel.
The diesel will be labelled B7, which means that it contains up to 7% biodiesel by volume.
All motor fuels sold at Alexela are biofuel-free
Alexela is the only petrol station chain in Estonia where all motor fuels are completely biofuel-free. Alexela fulfils its biofuel obligation with biomethane, which means that its contribution to a cleaner environment is several times greater, as biomethane is a 100% climate-neutral fuel. The motor fuels sold at Alexela also do not contain HVO or FAME.
What is what?
- HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil)
The vast majority of HVO sold in Europe is produced from palm oil and its by-product PFAD. Both palm oil and PFAD are three times more harmful to the environment than burning fossil diesel. PFAD is used as a raw material in the oleochemical industry, in the soap industry and as animal feed. Demand for it has further increased as a result of the production of HVO, and to meet this demand, rainforests and rainforest habitats have been destroyed. - FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester).
FAME biodiesel is produced mainly from animal fats and vegetable oils. FAME biodiesel can be blended into diesel fuel up to a maximum of 7% and it should be noted that FAME biodiesel is not suitable for long-term storage. Fuel users who store fuel for use in, for example, back-up generators should avoid FAME diesel. After a few months of storage, FAME diesel fuels may no longer be of good quality and engine operation may be impaired or the engine may not start at all. However, there is no cause for concern if used immediately.
